If I had to guess, I think Naomi Watts probably respects David Lynch's conviction. It catapulted Naomi Watts to stardom, solidified David Lynch as one of the most important directors of the modern era, and both of them appear to be good friends and collaborators to this day. Mulholland Drive is one of the best films ever made, and that scene in particular is one of the most iconic scenes in all of cinema history. And like a good director, or a good parent, David Lynch recognized that she was strong enough to go through with it and that in doing so she'd be better for it, and so would the film.Īnd if you look at how it all played out, I'd say he made the right decision. Obviously neither of us were there, so who knows for sure, but the way it seems to have played out is that David Lynch asked Naomi Watts to do something difficult, she agreed because she believed in David Lynch, and when it came to the moment to deliver she got cold feet. I don't disagree with you here, but I also don't think that applies to Mulholland Drive. The director is responsible for protecting the talent and there is a line you have to be aware of between asking something difficult and pushing someone into a situation that they are clearly uncomfortable with. Sure, what he asked of her was very difficult and her reaction on the day reflects that, but ultimately her own emotionality about the situation is her responsibility because she agreed to do it. David Lynch didn't force Naomi Watts into anything. It's a crude metaphor, but it illustrates my point.

When you put your kid on the diving board and he or she's crying saying, "I can't do this, I can't do this" - do you let them come back down the ladder, or encourage them to go through with the dive, knowing that later they'll be better for it? Yeah, that's a pretty fucking good reason to call cut. Putting an actress into a sexual situation and having them quite literally telling you "i can't do this" while crying.
